A Brief Dictionary of New Age Terminology

(Unless otherwise cited, adapted and/or excerpted from David L. Brown, Th.M. -- Investigative Researcher with Logos Communication; and from "The Vocabulary of the 'New Agers,'" Sept/Oct 2001, The Perilous Times.)

The average Christian has little idea what the concepts and ideals of the New Age really are. Then when they encounter New Age vocabulary, confusion really sets in. New Agers often play semantic word games, using the same words Christians do, yet the definitions used bear no resemblance to the Christian definitions. This brief dictionary is designed to help you understand New Age terminology as they define their terms. -- David L. Brown [5]

Age of Aquarius

Astrologers believe that evolution goes through cycles corresponding to the signs of the zodiac, each lasting from 2,000 to 2,400 years. New Age advocates say we are now moving from the cycle associated with Pisces into the one associated with Aquarius. The Aquarian Age will supposedly be characterized by a heightened degree of spiritual or cosmic consciousness.

A person sending a telepathic message.

Akashic Record

Imperishable records of every person's every word, thought, or act [allegedly from "outer space"] inscribed in the earth or spirit realms, allegedly from "outer space" (known as "ether").

The physical body.

A ten-billionth of a "meter." This is connected with "wave lengths."

The belief that inanimate things (such as plants) possess a soul or spirit. New Age advocates see animism as a way of rededicating the earth.

An esoteric cult founded by German mystic Rudolf Steiner. The term literally means "wisdom of man." It teaches that we possess the truth within ourselves. The system of thought is occultic and spiritistic.

Ascended Masters

Main article: Ascended Masters

Refers to those who have supposedly reached the highest level of spiritual consciousness and have become guides of the spiritual evolution of mankind.

Ascension of Christ

This is reinterpreted in a mystical way to refer to the rise of the "Christ-consciousness" in mankind. It describes the awareness that man is divine.

The word is from "star" (as in "ASTROnaut" and "ASTROnomy"). Here, it refers to an "after-death, out-of-the-body" experience. In Humanism, demonism, Satanism, and Theosophy, the extended umbilical cord holds the "astral" and the "physical" together. The experience is an "astral flight." Literally: "STAR FLIGHT," known on TV as "Star Trek."

Astral Body

A spiritual body capable of projection from the physical body. The astral body survives death.

Astral Flight

Soul travel occurring particularly during sleep or deep meditation.

A New Age counterpart to prayer. Also referred to as at-one-ment, the term relates primarily to the New Age idea that complete oneness with God can be experienced by human beings. One attains a hypnotic consciousness of an amoral, neuter "state of being" through meditation: Krishna consciousness, Nirvana, Prajna, Samadhi, etc. Various consciousness techniques are used to cause this "oneness": meditation; guided imagery; yoga; hypnosis; chanting of a mantra; ecstatic dancing; channeling of spirit guides; New Age music; and positive thinking or Alpha Mind techniques.

  • "Self-Awareness"
    • The second law (In satanism): [6]
      • This sounds modern, but in effect comes from ancient Babylon. The teachings basically are: All is one. Man is a divine being within. Life's purpose is to realize the divine within. Other terms used to describe this are Nirvana, the atonement or at-one-ment, God-consciousness, the satori, and the samadhi.
      • This state of Gnosis, or Self-Realization of who you are can be finally attained, though Yoga meditation or the like, only by turning within. Then, you self-realize that all life and all about you is Maya, or Self-Illusion. When this is achieved, you now recognize you are God!
    • Anton Szandor La Vey, The Godhead Within:
      • Anton Szandor La Vey, founder of the First Church of Satan in San Franciso, California, and author of a satanic bible, incorporates many of Aliester Crowley's formulas for divination and more. His pupils report that when you recognize your individual potential, through recognizing self-awareness by turning within then, you have achieved "godhead." Then you are a creator.
      • La Vey's students say, this is the core of Satanism!
        • ... and what does the Bible say about reverse speech, talking backwards, ect... in order to divine (divination) the future... Clearly, God said to avoid those things. In Deuteronomy 18:9-14, we are advised by God to stay away from those things and the people who do them. "You're not to have anything to do with them," He warns. Or, "I will turn my Face from you (Leviticus 20:6)." We are cautioned by God when He spoke through His prophet, Isaiah, that He is God in Isaiah 42:5. ... and that we are to bring our desires, ...our wants, ... our petitions to Him and none other, otherwise, the reverse will turn us away from depending upon God and He will Chastise us for it (see Psalm 5:2; 6:9, 55:1; Philippians 4:6). The Holy Writ has never instructed us to create what we want with our minds, thoughts, or words. God cautioned very strongly in Ezekiel 28:3, how we are to look upon our nature. He said, "But you are only a man, and not a god, though you boast yourself to be like God."

A psychic or sensitive living person whose body is used as a vehicle for communicating with spirits.

The science of the supernatural, although the word used in Philosophy (1600-1900, along with Axiology and Epistemology) never meant that at all. The Ascended Masters are the Fallen Angels Benjamin Creme's theology is directly founded on the teachings that were published by Helena P. Blavatsky (HPB) and Alice A. Bailey (AAB) as dictated to them from various Ascended Masters. Through a closer examination of their beliefs it can be shown that the so-called "Ascended Masters" who developed their twisted theology are in fact the Fallen Angels of the Judeo-Christian tradition. [8]

  • According to AAB, the Hierarchy of Ascended Masters who are responsible for humanity's evolution are led by a (Unholy) trinity of Supreme Beings. This trinity is explained in the following chart, taken from AAB's The Destiny of Nations, p.23

This continual cosmic process is called the "Tao" by the Chinese. (The process is described in terms of Yin and Yang -- see: Yin/Yang). Tao is that which is formless, yet the mother of all forms, and that which is timeless, yet prior to all manifestations, and that which does nothing, yet leaves nothing undone. The Zodiac is used to “herd the goats”, while the Bible is used to “shepherd the sheep”! Remember, only goats read horoscopes, as they need to find out what their father the Devil has planned for their lives! “Sheep” read the Bible, then talk to their Father about his plans for their life." [9] [10]

The band of twelve constellations along the plane of the ecliptic through which pass the sun, moon, and planets across the sky. Each constellation, or sign, is attributed symbolic significance and associations that affect various aspects of life on Earth.

Astrological signs represent twelve equal segments or divisions of the zodiac. According to strology, celestial phenomena reflect or govern human activity on the principle of "as above, so below", so hat the twelve signs are held to represent twelve basic personality types or characteristic modes of expression. [11]

  • The Western zodiac has twelve signs, as does the Chinese zodiac. In astronomy, the zodiac is the ring of constellations that lines the ecliptic, which is the apparent path of the Sun across the sky over the course of the year. The Moon and planets also lie within the ecliptic, and so are also within the constellations of the zodiac. In astrology, the zodiac denotes those signs which divide the ecliptic into twelve equal zones of celestial longitude. As such, the zodiac is a celestial coordinate system, more precisely an ecliptic coordinate system, taking the ecliptic as the origin of latitude, and the position of the sun at vernal equinox as the origin of longitude. The term zodiac derives from Latin zōdiacus, in turn from the Greek ζωδιακός κύκλος (zōdiakos kuklos), meaning "circle of animals", derived from ζώδιον (zōdion), the diminutive of ζῶον (zōon) "animal". The name is motivated by the fact that many of the signs of the classical Greek zodiac are represented as animals (six out of twelve, plus two mythological hybrids). the term and the names of the twelve signs are today mostly associated with horoscopic astrology. [...] The name of the twelve signs are equivalent to the names in use today, except that the name of the Eagle seems to have been usually substituted for Scorpio. [12]

The twelve signs of the zodiac are divided into the four elements: Fire signs are Aries, Leo and Sagittarius, Earth signs are Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn, Air signs are Gemini, Libra and Aquarius, and Water signs are Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces. Most modern astrologers still view the four classical elements as a critical part of interpreting the astrological chart. [13]
