Hand signs

Various notes:
- Important note: In photographs, the position/positioning of a given individual’s hand is debatable. However, in paintings and portraits the individual being portrayed is usually posing for the artist. Therefore, these renditions are much less debatable as to what the hand sign is conveying.
- "hand-gestures commonly used by Masons posing for portraits. A common one is known as the "Hidden Hand", whereby the right hand is placed partially or fully within one's shirt/jacket. Masonic kings, presidents, prime ministers, and media personalities have been photographed posing the Hidden Hand. Another common one is the "Claw", right hand at chest bending all knuckles into a claw." [134]

Homage salute

- In ancient Rome, an adlocutio was an address by a general (usually the emperor) to his massed army and a general salute from the army to their leader. It is often portrayed in sculpture, either simply as a single, life-size contraposto figure of the general with his arm outstretched (such as the Prima Porta Augustus), or a relief scene of the general on a podium addressing the army. Such relief scenes also frequently appear on imperial coinage.

The "claw hand" in modern times:

Founder of the infamous and notorious Hellfire Club in England. Quite possibly a Jacobite secret agent. Rumored to have also been involved in the Rosicrucian movement and Freemasonry.

The Hellfire Club was a secret society which engaged in depraved sexual orgies, drunkenness, Satanism, and held Black Masses.
Members included prominent men of the British aristocracy, and the most influential politicians of the day.
In 1883, after 8 years as Commander in-chief of the U.S. Army, Freemason and General George Washington bid sad farewell to his brothers in arms at New York City's Fraunces Tavern.

Hidden hand

Various notes:
- The "hidden hand" sign, is the sign of Jah-buh-lun (Jahbuhlun), the sacred God of Masonry. Jahbuhlun is known to the Masons as the "The Lost Name of God"
- When the Mason learns of the "The Lost Name of God", it is in receiving the 13th degree in the Scottish Rite or the 7th degree for the York Rite (known as the Mason of the Secret, or the Royal Arch degree [137]). This name of the Masonic God is so sacred it takes three Royal Arch Masons to be able to speak it.

The "three times three" position, which is assumed by the three Masons preforming the ritual of the Royal Arch Degree, in which they utter the name of the Masonic God - Jah-buh-lun.

Masonic notes:
- Jahbuhlun is Masonry's "Grand Omnific" word, the name of their omnipotent deity. The name Jahbuhlun has nine letters and is made up of three syllables, Jah, buh, lun. In the ritual for the Royal Arch Degree, the three Royal Arch Masons pronounce the name three times each, therefore, twenty-seven syllables are pronounced. This represents the twenty-seven days it takes the moon to pass through the circle of zodiacal signs.
- The name Jahbuhlun has three syllables representing a composite God made up of three subordinate deities. The Masonic material identifies the three as Yah (or Yahweh), Baal, and Osiris or On (spelled Un in the name Jahbuhlun). On was a city in Egypt where the worship of the sun God, Osiris, is alleged to have begun. Logically, the name should be spelled Yah-Baal-On, but Duncan's Masonic Ritual and Monitor admits that over the years the spelling has been "corrupted" by Freemasonry until it reached its current form.
- The three Masons grip hands high and low and chant, "Jah-buh-lun, Jah-buh-lun, Jah-buh-lun , Je-hov-ah". These three Masons pronouncing the name of Jahbuhlun are said to have come from Babylon. The candidate is told that these three "Masters" or "Sojourners" have come from Babylon to instruct him on how to symbolically build the Royal Arch. (Temple of Solomon in Jerusalem). According to Duncan's Masonic Ritual and Monitor, the candidate presents the hidden hand of Jahbuhlun when he is approached by the three "Sojourners" from Babylon.
- The three Masons preforming the ritual, are in a position known as "three times three". They have their three right feet forming a triangle, three left hands forming a triangle, and three right hands forming a triangle. It is while in this position each repeats the name of Jahbuhlun.
- The official Masonic explanation for hidden hand sign of Jah-buh-lun, is that it comes from a passage from the fourth chapter of Exodus in the Bible:
  - "And the Lord said unto Moses, put now thine hand into thy bosom; and he put his hand into his bosom; and when he took it out, behold his hand was leprous as snow."

Paul Whitehead
(1710-1774)

English satiric poet and prominent member of the infamous Hellfire Club.

Founded by Sir Francis Dashwood, the Hellfire Club was a secret society that operated in England from 1749 to the late 1760's. The Hellfire Club, which included members of the British aristocracy and high-ranking politicians, engaged in all forms of sexual depravity, drunkenness, Satanism, ad held Black Masses.

It was Whitehead who wrote about the activities of the society. Before his death, Whitehead himself burned these documents, in order to prevent any revealing of the society to the outside world.
George Washington
(1732-1799)

Freemason and 1st President of the United States.
Washington was initiated on November 4th, 1752 in the lodge at Fredericksburg, Virgina. [35]

After the war, Washington also belonged to and headed the exclusive secret society known as the Society of the Cincinnati (also called the Order of the Cincinnati).

The members of this society comprised of the richest and most elite men of Washington's day.

Washington served as Grand Master of Lodge No. 39 of Alexandria, Virgina (later Alexandria Lodge No. 22) for 20 months in 1788-1790. [36]

Washington's Masonic apron was embroidered by Marie Adrienne Francoise de Noailles, wife of fellow Freemason and personal friend, Lafayette - the French military officer and American Revolutionary War general. [37]

Throughout his career, Washington visited several lodges and attended many Masonic functions. His correspondence has many references to Freemasonry.

In a 1791 letter to members of St. David's Lodge in Newport, Rhode Island, Washington stated: "..I shall always be happy to advance the interests of the Society, and to be considered by them as a deserving Brother."

And in a 1798, letter to the Grand Lodge of Maryland; "So far as I am acquainted with the doctrines and principles of Freemasonry, I conceive them to be founded in benevolence, and to be exercised only for the good of mankind. I cannot, therefore, upon this ground, withdraw my approbation from it." [38]
Abraham Whipple
(1733-1819)

Freemason and American Revolutionary War naval commander.

Initiated and passed in St. Johns Lodge No. 1, Providence, Rode Island on June 4, 1761. [39]

Freemason [40] and one of the three men who alerted colonial minutemen of the approach of British army troops prior to the Battle of Lexington and Concord.

British POWs from the Battle of Saratoga complained to Parliament that he gave them short supplies.
John Jay
(1745-1829)

Co-wrote the Federalist Papers, first Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.

There is no direct proof that Jay was a Freemason. However, in a letter to George Washington on April 21st, 1779 he wrote the following text which appears to have Masonic significance: "The dissolution of our governments threw us into a political chaos. Time, Wisdom and Perseverance will reduce it into Form, and give it Strength, Order and Harmony. In this work you are (in the style of your professions) a Master Builder, and God grant that you may long continue a Free and Accepted one.” [41]

(1746-1797)

The man Instrumental in putting the Latin motto and popular Masonic phrase: "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (Out of Many, One) on U.S. coins.

Freemason and Austrian composer. Poisoned, died at age 35. Mozart's involvement in Freemasonry may have played a role in his death.

Marquis de Lafayette
(1757-1834)

33° Freemason [45] and French military officer who was a general in the American Revolutionary War and a leader of the Garde Nationale during the bloody French Revolution.
Lafayette was also made an honorary Grand Commander of Supreme Council of New York. [46]

More than 75 Masonic bodies in the U.S. have been named after him, including 39 lodges, 18 chapters, 4 councils, 4 commanderies, and 7 Scottish rite bodies. [47]
Maximilien Robespierre
(1758-1794)

One of the best-known figures of the bloody French Revolution. Involved in perpetuating the Reign of Terror (1793-1794).

On July 28th 1794, Robespierre was executed by guillotine, without trial in the Place de la Révolution.
(according to legend, the only man to be guillotined face-up).
Napoleon I
(1769-1821)

Freemason and Emperor of France, 1805-14.

Napoleon's four brothers - Joseph, Lucian, Louis, and Jerome, as well as his stepson, Eugene Beauharnais, his brother-in-law Murat, and nephew, Jerome, were all Freemason's. Most of them held high Masonic rank. [48]

Those who were chosen by Napoleon for high honor and office in the state were usually Freemason's. Of the six, who, with the emperor himself, formed the Grand Council of the Empire, five were certainly Freemasons, including Arch Chancellor Prince Jean Jacques Regis Cambaceres, an enthusiastic and active Mason.
Of the nine lesser imperial officers of state, six at least were active Masons. Of the marshals of France who served under Napoleon, at least 22 of the first 30 were Freemasons. [49]

Salomon Rothschild (1774-1855) - Vatican treasury banker

Wealthy Jewish(?) founder and overseer of the Vienna, Austria branch of the Rothschild clan.

Salomon Rothschild was quite possibly the paternal grandfather of Adolf Hitler. Hitler's father's mother was a maid in Salomon Rothschild mansion, and Salomon was a well-known womanizer. After she had become pregnant, she was abruptly dismissed. Interestingly, since this would have made Hitler part Jewish, investigating Hitler's family tree was illegal in Nazi Germany on pain of death.

Royal Navy officer and radical politician.
Simón Bolívar
(1783-1830)

Freemason. Known as the "George Washington of South America" Bolívar used genocidal terror tactics to achieve his aims. He joined Freemasonry in Cadiz, Spain and received the Scottish Rite degrees in Paris and was knighted in a Commandery of Knights Templar in France in 1807.

Bolívar founded and served as master of Protectora de las Vertudes Lodge No. 1 in Venezuela.

The country of Bolivia is named after him. Bolívar also served as the president of Columbia, Peru, and Bolivia in the 1820's. Belonged to the Order and Liberty Lodge No. 2, Peru. [50]

Émile Maximilien Paul Littré
(b. 1801 - d. 1881)

French lexicographer and philosopher.

"In 1875, he applied for membership in the Masonic Lodge La Clémente Amitié (Grand Orient de France)." (...) "... his funeral was conducted with the rites of the Roman Catholic Church." [51]
Pierre-Jean De Smet (b. 1801 - d. 1873)

Jean DeSmet was Albert Pike's master and was a definite influence to Pike's Knight of the order of the Klu Klux Klan
Victor Hugo
(b. 1802 - d. 1885)

French poet, playwright, and novelist. Hugo was also deeply involved in the occult and mysticism.

Hugo's demented mind wrote L'Homme qui rit (The Man Who Laughs), a story about a boy whose face had been horribly shaped into a permanent smile by fiendish cosmetic butchers.
This grotesque tale was the basis for Batman's "Joker" character. It has been alleged that Hugo was not only a Rosicrucian but was also Grand Master of the occultic order known as the Priory of Sion.

Freemason and Major General in the U.S. Army during the American Civil War. Anderson was in command of Sumter at the time of the Confederate attack.

Raised in Mercer Lodge No. 50, Trenton, N.J. May 27, 1858. He was also an honorary member of Pacific Lodge No. 233 of New York City. [52]

Giacomo Antonelli
(b. 1806 - d. 1876)

Powerful and influential Cardinal and Secretary of the Papal States under Pope Pius IX. Antonelli was involved in the 1865 plot to assassinate U.S. President Abraham Lincoln.

Antonelli also hid a murderous associate of assassin John Wilkes Booth in the Vatican State, where he had fled, to protect him from execution by American authorities who sought his extradition. [53]

First U.S. President to be impeached.
His close association with Freemasonry was one of the factors that led to his impeachment trial. [57]
Salmon P. Chase
(b. 1808 - d. 1873)

American politician and jurist who served as U.S. Senator from Ohio and the 23rd Governor of Ohio; as U.S. Treasury Secretary under President Abraham Lincoln; and as the sixth Chief Justice of the United States.

Chase was also a freemason, active in the lodges of Midwestern society, and a collaborator with John Purdue, the founder of Lafayette Bank and Purdue University [58]

Chase was instrumental in placing the phrase "In God We Trust" on United States currency. [59][60]
William Ewart Gladstone
(b. 1809 - d. 1898)

British Liberal Party statesman and four times Prime Minister of the United Kingdom (1868–74, 1880–85, 1886 and 1892–94).
Stephen A. Douglas
(b. 1813 - d. 1861)

Freemason and U.S. Senator from Illinois, who gained fame by his debates with Abraham Lincoln. Initiated on June 11th, 1840 Springfield Lodge No. 4, Springfield Illinois.
Upon his death, Douglas was buried Masonically, per his request.

A monument was dedicated to him Masonically in Chicago on Sept. 6th, 1866. Fellow Freemason and then - U.S. President Andrew Johnson attended the ceremony. [61]
Richard Wagner

Anti-Semitic German composer, conductor, theater director, and essayist.

Wagner was greatly admired by Adolf Hitler.

Freemason and 19th President of the United States.

Only president whose election was decided by a congressional commission.
George B. McClellan
(b. 1826 - d. 1885)

Freemason and Major General during the American Civil War. McClellan was the Democratic nominee opposing Lincoln in the 1864 presidential election.

James A. Garfield
(b. 1831 - d. 1881)

14° Freemason [63] and 20th President of the United States. (assassinated)

Initiated in Magnolia Lodge No. 20 of Columbus, Ohio, Nov. 22nd, 1861. The third degree was conferred to him by Columbus Lodge No. 30, Nov. 22nd, 1864.
Garfield received the 4-14° ASSR (Southern Jurisdiction) on Jan. 2nd, 1872 from Albert Pike, in Washington D.C.

At his funeral, nearly all the officers of the Grand Commandery of Ohio, 14 commanderies of that state, and 8 commanderies from adjacent jurisdictions were present and participated in the funeral cortege. [64]

U.S. Congressman, populist, and writer.

In 1882, Donnelly published Atlantis: The Antediluvian World, which detailed his theories concerning the mythical lost continent of Atlantis.

Donnelly is credited with initiating the Atlantis mania that became such a feature of popular literature in the 20th century and contributed to the emergence of Mayanism. (non-codified eclectic collection of New Age beliefs)
Edwin Booth
(b. 1833 - d. 1893)

Freemason, Shakespearean actor, and older brother of American stage actor and assassin, John Wilkes Booth.
Initiated in New York Lodge No. 330 on Sept 11th, 1857. [65]

Edwin once declared, "...to be Worshipful Master and to throw my whole soul in that work, with the candidate for my audience, and the lodge for my stage, would be greater personal distinction than to receive the plaudits of the people in the theaters of the world." [66]

The secret Masonic handshake of the fellow craft degree is quite different. It begins as a regular handshake, but then one mason presses his thumb against the area between the first and second knuckle joints of the first two fingers of the other person. The second mason reciprocates the gestures by pressing his thumb against the area between the first and second knuckle joints of the first two fingers of the other mason. This handshake is sometimes referred to as "Shibboleth.”
Tubalcain Handshake

The secret Masonic handshake of the master mason degree begins with one mason pressing his thumb in the space between the second and third knuckles of the right hand. At this point, the other mason moves his thumb to the same spot on the other mason’s hand. They each press their thumbs firmly into the space between the second and third knuckles of their hands. This handshake or grip is sometimes referred to as "Tubalcain.”
Ma-Ha-Bone Handshake

The Master Mason also has a handshake or grip known as the “Ma-Ha-Bone.” This involves interlacing the thumbs of both hands when two masons meet and shake (with their right hands). One mason presses his fingers against the other mason’s wrist. The other mason presses the tops of his fingers against the other mason’s hand in a similar gesture. This secret handshake is also known as the Strong Grip of the Master Mason or the Lion's Paw.
Boaz Handshake

The handshake of an entered apprentice is the first handshake that a new mason learns. This handshake, also known as "Boaz," is made by pressing one’s thumb on the top of the first knuckle joint of the Mason one is shaking hands with. The other mason then presses his thumb against the apprentice mason’s knuckle. When the apprentice mason first takes his oath, he is first given this handshake by The Worshipful Master during the taking of the degree.
Jachin Hanshake

The Jachin Handshake, also known as the Real Grip Of A Fellow Craft, is the handshake of the Fellow Craft mason, or the mason who has attained the Fellow Craft degree. In this handshake, the mason takes another mason by the right hand. Initially, the handshake is much like an ordinary handshake, but then the mason presses the top of his thumb very firmly on the second knuckle of the mason he is shaking hands with. "Hanging over the fireplace in the famous Green Room at the White House in Washington, D.C. is an acclaimed oil portrait of Benjamin Franklin, one of our country’s most celebrated “founding fathers.” It depicts the famed statesman sitting studiously, poring over an ancient document which he is holding with his right hand. His left hand, meanwhile, is at his throat, set with the finger in a V-design, the thumb pushing upward to his chin. Franklin’s neck is a prominent focus of the painting. Obviously, this is a sign Franklin is communicating." [128]
Sir Francis Dashwood
(b. 1708 - d. 1781)

Founder of the infamous and notorious Hellfire Club in England. Quite possibly a Jacobite secret agent. Rumored to have also been involved in the Rosicrucian movement and Freemasonry.

The Hellfire Club was a secret society which engaged in depraved sexual orgies, drunkenness, Satanism, and held Black Masses.
Members included prominent men of the British aristocracy, and the most influential politicians of the day.
Paul Revere
(b. 1734 - d. 1818)

Freemason, metal-smith and American Revolutionary War patriot. Initiated at St. Andrews Lodge, Boston, Massachusetts in 1760.
Revere made seals and jewels for several Masonic lodges. [129]

Revere was Grand Master of St. Andrews Lodge in 1770 and again in 1777-79, and from 1780-82. [130]
