- " Then God turned, and gave them up to worship the host of heaven; as it is written in the book of the prophets, O ye house of Israel, have ye offered to me slain beasts and sacrifices by the space of forty years in the wilderness?" Acts 7:42
- "And they shall spread them before the sun, and the moon, and all the host of heaven, whom they have loved, and whom they have served, and after whom they have walked, and whom they have sought, and whom they have worshipped: they shall not be gathered, nor be buried; they shall be for dung upon the face of the earth." Jeremiah 8:2
Intro
- Various numerological properties have also been associated with magic squares. Pivari associates the squares illustrated above with Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, the Sun, Venus, Mercury, and the Moon, respectively. Attractive patterns are obtained by connecting consecutive numbers in each of the squares (with the exception of the Sun magic square). [17]

- Here are some additional notes on the history of magic squares (from the on-line magazine Convergence). [18]
- The idea of the magic square was transmitted to the Arabs from the Chinese, probably through India, in the eighth century and is discussed by Thabit ibn Qurra (known for his formula for amicable numbers) in the early ninth. A list of squares of all orders from 3 to 9 are displayed in the Encyclopaedia, (the Rasa`il), compiled about 990 by a group of Arabic scholars known as the "brethren of purity" (the Ikhwan al- safa), (see [11], Vol. 1, pp. 660f.). Despite all this, no general constructive methods appeared until slightly later. In 1225, Ahmed al-Buni showed how to construct magic squares using a simple bordering technique, but he may not have discovered the method himself. Biggs ([3], p.120), referring to a paper by Camman ([5] ), suggests that the methods explained by Moschopoulos may have been of Persian origin and be linked to those expounded by al-Buni. Camman indeed claims that the two methods given by Moschopoulos for constructing odd magic squares were known to the Persians, citing an anonymous Persian manuscript (Garrett Collection no. 1057, Princeton University). Even so, this document contains examples and not explicit methods.
- It appears that magic squares were introduced to Europe through Spain. Indeed, Abraham ben Meir ibn Ezra (c. 1090-1167), an Hispano-Jewish philosopher and astrologer, translated many Arabic works into Hebrew and had a deep interest in magic squares and numerology in general. He travelled widely throughout Italy and beyond, and may have been the one of the people responsible for the introduction of magic squares into Europe.

- Seals
- Each planet can be represented by a seal or diagram. The seal is based off of the planet's magic square, with the seal touching every number within the square at least once.
- Sigils of the Intelligences
- Each planet has traditionally possessed both a spirit and an intelligence: ethereal souls responsible for the baleful and beneficial influences (respectively) of the individual planet. Here are the common sigils for the planetary intelligences.

We don't know if this story is true, but the legend tells us that in the 26th century before Christ, Chinese people brought sacrifices to their rivergod from the river Lo, because the river almost flooded. After every sacrifice a turtle came out of the water and crept around the sacrifice and disappeared back into the water. The rivergod didn't accepted the sacrifices until a child noticed a special figure on the back of the animal. [1]

Note: Are they rendering hommage to Peter or Jupiter? The most famous 4 x 4 magic square is the so-called Melancholia magic square. In 1514, Albrecht Dürer used the square in his engraving Melancholie which depicts the indecision of the intellectual. The two numbers, 15 and 14, in the centre of the bottom row date the engraving. Sator Square
- Various notes:
- The Sator-Rotas Square (or Templar Magic Square), with the embedded anagram of Pater Noster, is an ancient charm of great power and mystery. The earliest example was discovered scratched on a wall in the buried city of Pompeii and dated back to the first century AD. Although used by early Christian Mystics as a magical charm the square has surfaced in cultures and religions all over the world. Because of the hidden anagram, Pater Noster, the square was originally thought to be of Christian design, but there is now strong evidence that it predates Christianity by a considerable margin and refers to the ancient God, Mithras. In Rome during the Middle Ages this square was inscribed on a variety of common, everyday objects such as utensils and drinking vessels. It was also found above doorways. It was believed that the square had magical properties, and that making it visible would ward off evil spirits. The words on this square roughly translate to "The Creator (or Savior) holds the working of the spheres in his hands." C. W. Ceram read the square boustrophedon (in alternating directions), with tenet repeated. This produces Sator opera tenet; tenet opera sator, translated: 'The Great Sower holds in his hand all works; all works the Great Sower holds in his hand.' (Ceram 1958, p. 30) [19]

For years, a source of attention of many scholars is the mysterious inscription on a valley on the left of the portal: . The prevailing interpretation considers that it is a cryptogram that would form the anagram words Pater Noster to be read horizontally and vertically according to the format of a Greek cross. Located in Bussi sul Tirino [4]
It is possible to write a horizontal and a vertical 'Pater Noster' with the letters of the sator square, forming a Greek cross. The two As and two Os which remain are then taken as Alpha and Omega. [5]

The Sator-Rotas Square has been discovered in many countries and from many periods of history. The example here was found in 1925 on the bathroom wall of Paquius Proculus. It appeared to have been scratched there in 79 a.d. The Square was carried by the Roman Legions and was used throughout the Roman Empire. [9][10]

Double Six Magic Square - Jill Britton. Buried in the foundation of a house to dispel evil spirits, the Double Six Magic Square at the Shaanxi History Museum contains six numbers in length and breadth, the numbers in vertical, horizontal and diagonal lines add up to 111, respectively. [11]
“Sigilla Solis” or “Sun Seal” This amulet has the god of the sun standing on the lion. This indicated the sun's position in the constellation of Leo during the hot days of August. The back is inscribed “Nachyel,” meaning “intelligence of the sun” and the numbers 1 to 36. These numbers are arranged in such a way that the sum of any given row, column or diagonal is 111, and therefore the sum of all six rows or all six columns is 666.
This illustration is also a solar seal, but it honors the star Basilisco, which was the diminutive form of the Greek Basileus (king), thus meaning the same as the Latin regulus. Regulus is the only first magnitude star in the constellation of Leo. The sun and the moon are again clearly seen on this amulet and on the reverse side is the same arrangement of numerals with the actual figure 666 given as the total.
One of the highlights of the Masonic Temple Room in Washington is the skylight (6 by 6 matrix) flooding the room with light. [12]
The Hebrew characters with their numerical equivalents are shown here in the traditional sequence. (See R. Steiner The Apocalypse of St. John. Lectures on the Book of Revelation) [13]

A Franklin magic square has constant row and column sums, and while it may lack the diagonal properties (and usually does), it possesses other magical patterns instead. For example, if you join half of one diagonal to half of the other (see gray squares in the figure at right), you obtain what Ben called a "bent row". Its entries sum to 260, the same as a row or column sum in that figure. [15]

Magic Square of 27
This remarkable 27x27 square contains the first 729 numbers and will offer up the same value if any line is added horizontally, vertically, or diagonally from corner to corner. As Socrates state, 729 is a number concerned with "days and nights, and months and years". The solar number 365 appears in the centermost cell of this magic square and the number 729 is the total number of days and nights comprising a year (365+364). [16]

Usage of Sigils and Magic Squares
- The Abramelin operation: After the preparatory phase has been successfully completed, the magician's Holy Guardian Angel will appear to reveal, to the magician, magical secrets. Once this is accomplished, the magician must evoke the twelve Kings and Dukes of Hell (Lucifer, Satan, Leviathan, Belial, etc.) and bind them. Thereby, the magician gains command of them in his own mental universe, and removes their negative influence from his life. Further, these spirits must deliver a number of familiar spirits (four principal familiars, and several more associated with a set of magical word-square talismans provided in the Abramelin's Book Four). The magical goals for which the demons can be employed are typical of those found in grimoires: the practitioner is promised the ability to find buried treasure, cast love charms, the ability of magical flight, and the secret of invisibility- to list a small number of examples.
