[[w:Charles Fox Parham\|Charles Fox Parham]] was a Wesleyan trained preacher who had left the Methodist Episcopal Church. The following was prepared by Christopher E. Brown for a paper entitled New Religious Movements for the University of Virginia:

			In the fall of 1900, a former pastor in the Methodist Episcopal Church by the name of Charles Parham began the [[w:Bethel Bible College\|Bethel Bible College]] in Topeka, Kansas. As an assignment to his students he required that they investigate the "baptism of the Spirit" or what was also known as the Pentecostal Blessing. After returning from a speaking engagement he was astonished to learn that all of his students had the same story; while several different things occurred when this blessing fell, the indisputable proof on each occasion was that believers spoke in other tongues. After learning this, the students immediately began to seek the baptism with the evidence of ''[[w:Glossolalia\|speaking with other tongues]]''. 			That Parham and the group of women had been experimenting with individual and group hypnosis, and that Parham had influenced the "shocking" findings by encouraging the idea that the "baptism of the Spirit" was a second, mystical event, distinct from being "born again", is rarely mentioned in these histories.
